Saddles for your horse are much more than just another piece of tack. Some day they may even become antiques or collector's items. A western style saddle is more comfortable on your horse's back due to even distribution of the weight. With a Western Saddle that is a proper fit a person will be able to place about three fingers between the withers and pommel of the saddle directly under the saddle horn.
Remember a western saddle is much different to an English saddle and as such will prevent you from using one saddle for both English and Western riding styles. If you plan to compete in horse shows or do dressage work, you may need to buy English style tack, while Western tack is needed for barrel racing or ideal for trail rides since the high pommel and saddle horn provide a measure of additional support over uneven trails.
Western saddles are available in various models. It is hand carved and made using Indian leather materials. Western saddles are also built to hold the ?gear? By contrast, an English saddle provides a minimum of support and therefore much less interference between the horse and rider. Western saddles are more comfortable and provide the rider with a more secure seat. English riding focuses more on jumping, horsemanship, and communication between horse and rider.
Western saddles are the largest and most weighty equipment of horse tack. It is not uncommon for western saddles to weigh at least 30 lbs. Western saddles are measured from the rider side of the horn, back to the top of the cantle, and English saddles are measured from the button in the front, diagonally back to the top of the cantle. Western saddles are used for western pleasure riding, roping and other Western disciplines and Australian stock saddles are closely related to Western saddles. After trying out a few saddles you'll have an idea what seat size fits you best.
For many years western saddles were made on a wooden tree or framework, covered with rawhide and then layers of leather. today western saddles may be made from several different materials. They may be built on either wooden trees covered in fiberglass or rawhide, or a material called ralide which is a polyethelene. Most are covered with leather, although there are now lighter weight synthetic saddles available.
